[video] rebel without a cause

What an exciting week!

In light of all the discussion, Adstringendum, let's chat- who would you trust to nominate as ombudsman?

Ombudsman? What an intriguing idea.

[Yeah, he's been checking out your comments.]

I think that it would be a nice gesture, if even just to appease the paranoid among us.

[little laugh] You can't appease the paranoid. But I think there are those with legitimate concerns who may be comforted.

Your name has actually been put forward.

Has it now? I am honored.

Al seems to have a great amount of faith in you.

[there's a bit of warm regard in his voice] We've fought side by side. I would trust him with my life.

I had questions about what a military man would do in an essentially... well, troublemaking position.

You're going to have to excuse me for making assumptions, but the organization I was a part of, which sounds rather like your own, was very much of the mindset that in terms of preserving social order you couldn't make omelettes without breaking eggs.

[identity profile] grandvision.livejournal.com 2011-09-11 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Your concerns are completely justifiable.

[He takes a moment to figure out how to explain his situation in the least confusing way possible.]

Where I am from, the government was involved in a plot that would have killed all of its citizens, and had already needlessly slaughtered the citizens of neighboring countries. I led an effort to overthrow that government and establish a democracy. I broke quite a few eggs, as you say. I do not regret my actions, but I live with them every day.

I am not a pacifist like the Elric brothers. I am not afraid to take lives when absolutely necessary. But I do not condone violence simply to establish a facade of social order.

And how would you see social order? Here?

[identity profile] grandvision.livejournal.com 2011-09-11 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Fewer murders and kidnappings would be nice. [deceptively light]

There are some dangerous elements from other worlds who I believe merit watching. Madara was responsible for the mind control and kidnappings, and there is a demon named Naraku who is reportedly up to no good.

But I believe what is mostly lacking here is not a strong police force, but basic necessities. Power and running water, for one thing. And while many people maintain their own gardens, there are many forced to scavenge who go hungry. Community gardens, or a standardized bartering system where people can sell extra foodstuffs for services and other supplies, would also go a long way to improving everyone's quality of life. A well-fed population is a much more peaceful population.

[identity profile] mister-hatter.livejournal.com 2011-09-11 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
And laws? What would you like to see?

[voice|private]

[identity profile] grandvision.livejournal.com 2011-09-11 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
I am still fairly new here; I cannot judge what laws are necessary here. I think that should be a matter of public discussion and mutual consensus.

[voice|private]

[identity profile] mister-hatter.livejournal.com 2011-09-11 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
Would you let the police force put them into place, without that public consensus?

[voice|private]

[identity profile] grandvision.livejournal.com 2011-09-11 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
That would be no better than a military dictatorship.

[voice|private]

[identity profile] grandvision.livejournal.com 2011-09-11 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
You approve of dictatorships, or my answer was satisfactory?

[voice|private]

[identity profile] mister-hatter.livejournal.com 2011-09-11 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
Your charming streak of intelligence and liberalism?

[voice|private]

[identity profile] grandvision.livejournal.com 2011-09-11 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
You flatter me. I merely relate opinions based on my experience with my own government.

[voice|private]

[identity profile] mister-hatter.livejournal.com 2011-09-11 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
Which wasn't positive, I take it?

[voice|private]

[identity profile] grandvision.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
[soft laugh]

There is a reason I led the effort to overthrow it.

[voice|private]

[identity profile] mister-hatter.livejournal.com 2011-09-13 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
All right.

I was thinking that the position should be non-permanent. Four months, maybe six.

[identity profile] grandvision.livejournal.com 2011-09-14 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Not everybody seems as keen on the idea as you are. Doesn't that concern you?
